Because LEDs give off much less heat and do not emit UV rays, they better preserve artwork. Continue reading 'The Pegasus Lighting Roundup for June 14 to July 2'»

The LED Battery Operated Night Light can be mounted anywhere with no wiring required.
Any well-designed home has a night light or two installed to provide a safe source of light for the bathroom, kitchen, hallway, or bedroom. Even outdoor areas can benefit from a night light. (Ever struggled to find your keys in a bag after coming home late at night? A motion-sensor activated night light next to the door would fix that problem in an instant).
Night lights placed in the bedroom and bathroom also reduce the risk of falling for older adults. In fact, doctors are recommending installing night lights in the home as part of a preventative measure. Check out our blog post for more details.
We offer over 25 different models of night lights, so hopefully this guide will help you figure out which type is right for each room in your home.

There are articles all over the news of towns replacing old street lights with LED lighting. You’ve probably read the reports: LED lighting improves the brightness, visibility, and energy efficiency of street lights.
The DOE recently released a report basically confirming the superiority of LED lighting. They compared the performance of high-pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, induction luminaires, and LED luminaires on a street in Palo Alto, California. Their findings:
- LED used the least energy of the three systems (a 44% reduction compared to HPS – which is the traditional streetlight for most towns).
- LED provided comparable average illumination on the street in comparison to the other two systems.
- LED provided more uniform light output than HPS or induction and had better cutoff – which means the light didn’t overflow onto residential properties as much.
For more information, see the complete report.

Journalist Tim Conneally wrote an informative, humorous take on LED technology in his article I left a light bulb on for one year straight, or: Why LED bulbs are about to change your life. He discusses his experiment comparing LEDs with CFLs for a year and talks about the implications of Philip’s new LED “replacement bulb.”
MIT is investing millions in a ‘living lab’ initiative to cut electricity usage by 15 percent in the next three years. About half of the reductions will come in the form of more efficient LED lighting systems.
John Bullough from the RPI Lighting Research Center in Troy wrote a great article on The Science Behind LED Technology. He explains the basics of LEDs and how they can be incorporated into homes. Continue reading 'The Pegasus Lighting Roundup for May 21 to June 11'»
It’s that time of year again. May marks the beginning of sea turtle nesting season, which will carry on through October. Sea turtle protection advocates this time of the year are typically discussing pollution prevention and lighting restrictions. Hatchlings that emerge from their nests at night make their way to the brightest horizon, and if they are misguided by light sources along the beach that outshine the stars, they are not likely to survive.

Of course, there are a few other factors complicating turtle nesting season this year. Wildlife biologists fear the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will wipe out the sea turtle population. Even if the spill stays away from Florida’s east coast, it will still have an impact there because sea turtles swim in the Gulf through migratory patterns.
On Padre Island, Texas, federal officials have reported 156 sea turtle deaths so far. They can’t automatically attribute those to the oil spill, but they say the number is far higher than last year at this point in the season. Sea turtles have made a fragile comeback since the 1979 Ixtoc spill. Continue reading 'Saving the Sea Turtles: LED Lighting and the Oil Spill'»

The last thing you want to face when coming home late at night is stumbling over a flight of dark steps and fumbling blindly for the keys. Outdoor lighting is really a matter of safety. Of course, the glow of step lights does provide a nice aesthetic appeal, but the more important issue is whether you feel secure finding your way inside if it’s pitch black.
If your outdoor lighting is in dire need of an update, determine which step lights are right for you.
If you’re looking for an effortless install:
The LED Battery Operated Step Light includes a simple mounting plate with two screws, no wiring required. It’s motion sensor activated and switches to a low-glow mode to conserve battery power when no motion is detected. It’s a single bright white LED light that can be mounted anywhere you need light. Battery power will last over a year, and the design is completely weatherproof.

People celebrated the last ten seconds of 2009 across the country much like any other New Year’s Eve: watching the ball drop in Times Square. While the ball may have looked the same for those gathering in New York and the millions tuning in, its makeup represented a monumental shift toward sustainability for 2010. Philips Electronics designed the ball to save 78% more energy by replacing the incandescent and halogen bulbs with LED light bulbs for the 2010 numerals. The LED flood lights Philips added used just nine watts compared to the 40 watts the incandescent and halogen bulbs used in the past. Philips says ten percent of its lighting sales now come from LED lights.
